It all began quite unexpectedly: in 1904, the Hassee-Winterbek gymnastics club was founded in Kiel. Three years after its formation, girls joined the men and boys gymnasts - and in 1920, handball was introduced as a separate discipline. It was a good 20 years later, however, before the club began to take part in inter-regional competitions. Kiel experienced their first wave of success in the years between 1948 and 1963 when the team was crowned Field Handball champions twice and Indoor Handball champions on three occasions. Following these successes, things went quiet in Kiel until in 1993 when the legendary Zvonimir "Noka" Serdarušić took charge of THW.
What followed was to become the biggest success story in the history of handball: 20 German championships (a Bundesliga record), nine cup wins, nine Supercup victories, seven European Cup titles (including 3 Champions League triumphs), as well as gold and the 2007 European Club Cup and the 2011 World Cup. bwin began its partnership with THW in 2012. Since the beginning of the cooperation, the bwin logo has been present on the players' shorts, as well as on advertising banners in the team's Sparkassen Arena home stadium. The Kiel stars began the partnership on top form, with the team of Omeyer, Ilic & Co. taking the triple (Championship, Cup and Champions League) with an amazing 34 league games without dropping a point.
