How the 2026/27 Champions League works

How the league-phase schedule is determined
Before the league phase, UEFA divides the 36 teams into four pots of nine based on their club coefficients. Each team faces two opponents from every pot, one at home and one away, for a total of eight matches. As a general rule, teams from the same country cannot meet at this stage, and limits apply to the number of opponents from any one association.
Each team therefore has a different schedule. Two teams on the same number of points may have faced opponents of very different strength, which is worth considering when assessing qualification markets.
League-phase standings
A win is worth three points and a draw one point. Because teams do not face the same opponents, schedule difficulty can influence the standings. If two or more teams are level on points, they are separated by the following criteria:
- Goal difference.
- Goals scored.
- Away goals scored.
- Number of wins.
- Number of away wins.
If teams remain level, further criteria apply, including the points earned by the opponents they faced. A top-eight finish secures direct qualification for the round of 16 and a more favourable position in the knockout draw, so the final league-phase matchday often carries significant stakes.
The knockout bracket
Unlike the old format, the route from the play-offs to the final is largely determined by the league-phase standings. Higher-ranked teams are placed in bracket positions designed, in principle, to keep them apart from other leading sides until the later rounds. Seeded teams also play the second leg at home in the play-offs.
The final league-phase matchday can therefore reshape a team’s potential route to the final and affect its outright winner odds. The draw determines the exact ties within the bracket positions established by the standings.
How Belgian teams qualify
The number of places awarded to each country depends on UEFA’s association coefficient rankings. Belgium receives one direct league-phase place through the Jupiler Pro League (Champion), and one place for the third qualifying round (Runner-up). Since 2024/25, the two associations with the best collective performance in the previous season’s European competitions have also received an additional league-phase place. The Champions League and Europa League holders are also guaranteed places in the following season’s competition.
Champions League match schedule
Champions League matches are usually played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. During European competition weeks, Europa League and Conference League fixtures are generally played on Thursday.
Matchday odds are published in advance once fixtures have confirmed dates and kick-off times. In the knockout rounds, second-leg markets are published once the ties and schedules have been confirmed. You can find previews in the Champions League section of the bwin blog.
Champions League winner betting
The outright Champions League winner market lets you back a team to lift the trophy. It is usually available throughout the season, including before the league phase begins. Odds can change in response to results, injuries, January transfers and the knockout bracket.
Depending on the stage of the season, other tournament markets may include:
- Team to reach the final.
- Stage a team will reach, such as the quarter-finals or semi-finals.
- Champions League top goalscorer.
- League-phase performance, such as a top-eight finish.

Knockout ties: match result, qualification and extra time
In two-legged ties, it is important to distinguish between a bet on one match and a bet on the overall tie:
- The 1X2 market for a second leg is settled after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, even if extra time follows.
- The team-to-qualify market is settled on the aggregate result across both legs, including extra time and penalties when required.
- The away-goals rule was abolished from the 2021/22 season. If the aggregate score is level, the tie goes to extra time and, if necessary, penalties.
- For example, if the first leg ends 2-1 and the other team wins the second leg 1-0, the aggregate score is 2-2 and the tie proceeds to extra time. The second-leg 1X2 market has already been settled as a 1-0 result.
Champions League final betting
The final is a single match played at a venue chosen in advance by UEFA. The 2027 final will take place at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. Because there is only one match, the outright champion and team-to-qualify outcomes are effectively the same, while the 1X2 market is still settled after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. The winner then competes in the UEFA Super Cup.
Live Champions League betting
During Champions League matches, live markets may include the next goal, goals scored during the remainder of the match, corners and cards. In knockout ties, qualification odds also move in real time as the aggregate score changes. Some markets may be temporarily suspended after incidents such as a penalty award or VAR review.
Other European competitions
In addition to the Champions League, you can bet on the Europa League and Conference League, which also use a 36-team league phase followed by knockout rounds, as well as the Women's Champions League.
What to check before betting on a Champions League match
- Competition stage and match context: a league-phase fixture differs from a second leg in a finely balanced tie.
- First-leg result: the aggregate score can shape each team’s approach to the return fixture.
- Domestic schedule: league matches immediately before or after a European fixture may influence team selection and rotation.
- Absences and suspensions: injuries and accumulated cards can rule players out.
- Settlement period: check whether the market covers 90 minutes or the full tie.
- No statistic or pre-match analysis can guarantee the outcome of a match. Odds represent probabilities, not certainties.
